Congress Likely to Extend Funding Deadline
This week, Congress will focus on funding some government operations past the December 7 deadline as lawmakers work to tie up loose ends, including reauthorizing flood insurance and farm programs. Top congressional leaders have yet to spell out how they plan to organize the appropriations bills; however, Republicans and Democrats went back and forth over the weekend about how to avoid a partial government shutdown. The goal is to get this fight out of the way for the remembrance of former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away this weekend. House leadership has indicated they will likely support a bill that will extend funding until December 21. The House is looking to pass the measure by unanimous consent, which means that every Member would have to agree.
